Preserving independent Boston-based institutions: If anything else, the aborted merger talks between FleetBoston’s Chad Gifford and John Hancock’s David D'Alessandro show they really care about Boston and its position within the financial world. Hope they resume the merger discussions if and when their share prices rise and give Fleet and Hancock some protection.
