Remembering Gerald Ford
Gerald Ford was indeed a
good-natured and classy guy. Locally, I'll also remember Ford receiving the Kennedys'
Profiles in Courage Award for his pardoning of Richard Nixon -- a move that all but doomed Ford's presidential election hopes but helped heal the nation's Watergate wounds. The Kennedys themselves showed graciousness and class by acknowledging years later the courageous nature of Ford's decision.
Update -- Locally, it was also a big deal when Ford came to Massachusetts in 1975 to celebrate the bicentennial of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. I got to see him, briefly, at Concord's North Bridge.
