A 2nd-round pick?
That was my first incredulous reaction to
news of the
Cassel-Vrabel trade. But then I thought: 1.) Cassel was probably gone after next year anyway. 2.) a high second-round pick is effectively a first-round pick for the Pats. 3.) the Pats must be confident both about Brady's comeback (though I'm not) and Kevin O’Connell as a backup (I haven't a clue). I also haven't been overly impressed with Cassel. But I'm in a minority on that one. ... Vrabel's departure was a sad surprise. Professional sports is a brutal business with no room for sentimentality.
Update --
Ron thinks the trade was a 'best-case scenario' for the Pats. ... I'm also apparently not alone in thinking Cassel's performance last year was not indicative of future performance.
